Choosing your niche can be overwhelming for new entrepreneurs, because it’s the foundation on which everything else will be built. If you don’t have a good niche, then you don’t have much of a business at all! The idea behind choosing a niche is to find something that you can specialize in and that is also profitable. This article will help you figure out how to choose the best niche for your business.

Do your homework

If you’re launching a product-based business, your choice of niche can determine whether or not you succeed. Do your homework before committing to an idea and asking people for money. The first thing you need to do is search for similar products on Amazon and see how well they’re selling.

Know who you are

Before you can begin narrowing down your niche, you must first identify who you are and what your true passions and interests are. To get started, create an easy-to-remember title for yourself (e.g., Instructional Writer or Tech Enthusiast). Next, ask yourself: What is it that I love? What makes me happy? What do I spend my free time on? The answer to these questions will give you a sense of direction when it comes time to choosing your niche.

What markets have you been in before?

Before you can choose a niche, you need to know what markets you’ve already been in. I’m not asking you to have built any products, but just think back on your time at school and all of your past jobs. If anything comes up that might be worth considering for your business, write it down. Then we’ll dig deeper into that later in Step 4.

What new skills do you need?

Once you’ve decided on your idea, ask yourself if you have all of your bases covered. Have you got all of your ducks in a row? Do you know everything that’s involved in executing it? Chances are, whatever you’re wanting to start isn’t something you already know how to do. Even though many startups require little skill, that doesn’t mean they are without challenges. Consider seeking out a successful mentor who has already travelled the journey you are about to embark upon.

What do you not like doing?

Whatever you choose, remember that you’re going to be spending a lot of time on it. It should be something that genuinely interests you, something you don’t mind working hard at and learning more about. It shouldn’t feel like work – if it does, then try another niche. If you can find one that combines your love for writing with an interest in fitness or nutrition and ties into your mission statement then all the better!

Which skills can earn you the most money?

In order to be successful, you need to think about what skills you have that can earn you money. If you have mastered a skill and can teach others how to do it, why not charge for your services? Whether it’s building websites or fixing cars, there are plenty of people out there willing and able to pay for your expertise. The idea here is simple: find a niche and fill it.

What will your life be like if you earn enough money?

What is your ideal life? What will you do if you have enough money to make it happen? Write about your ideal life. Will you travel or stay home? Get married or not? How will you spend your time? In what ways will having money change your life for good and for bad? Talk about all of these things when describing what your life would be like if you earn enough money. Start off with "If I earn enough money..." Starting a business can be a tough journey, and revisiting this ideal life will give the motivation to endure the inevitable struggles.

How many hours per week do you want to work at this?

Whatever number you decide, remember that you want to make your dream job feel like less of a day job and more of something you love. So many people sacrifice their personal time for work because they don’t know how else to reach their goals. The good news is: there are smarter ways! Think about what you really want out of life—the things that bring you joy—and design a career around them. If it’s not feasible right now, just be patient. You can slowly work your way up to automating and outsourcing the aspects of your business that you do not enjoy!

Will this make me happy in 10 years' time?

The most critical thing to ask yourself is whether you’ll be happy in 10 years’ time with your chosen career. In fact, happiness should probably be at number one in your decision-making process—but it can be quite hard to predict how you will feel about something like starting your own business, or taking on an enterprise development role, in 10 years’ time. These career paths don’t lend themselves well to planning too far ahead, and you'll likely need to pivot in some form along the way!
